Just the name alone makes me laugh. Entrecard Popper! What the hell is it? “It’s a WordPress Plugin that pops your Entrecard up to the top middle of the page when a user comes from an Entrecard surfing site, otherwise it stays where you put it.” In other words, when an Entrecard User visits your page, the widget pops to the top of the page. No more searching for hidden widgets. This is great for those people who don’t like to “waste” prime ad real estate on Entrecard. I once discussed such an idea with Phirate using cookies. This plugin instead triggers the effect by checking the referrer. Quite clever actually. I will be installing this on one of my blogs for sure.
Note that to see this popping effect, you have to visit a site from your inbox at the Entrecard main site only. It also works from a person’s Entrecard profile page. The widget can be removed from the page by clicking on the “close widget” button. See below for screenshots.

No pop-up version of the page

Pop-up Version of page
That is very clever! I want to see it in action. And yes, the name is cute. Makes me smile!
wonder if the pop-up blockers don’t kill it?
Thank you for the review Turnip.
Might also note it pops for createlf.com, powerdropping.com the 2 Entracard surfing sites.
If there are features you’d like to see let me know.

It use css to pop it so no pop blocker will stop it
i’ve seen it in action on another blog, but won’t the popup blockers kill it?
How cute! I may have to try that on my photo blog. I don’t really like the widget in the header as it’s distorted it, but the theme I’m using doesn’t have any sidebars (and I chose it for that reason — wanted all the space for the pictures), so everything goes in the footer which is a killer for e-card.

Great idea…. gonna put it up on mine!
So if you’re not an Entrecard member does that mean you don’t see the widget at all? Also, I wonder how people feel about advertising on sites where they can have their ad closed.
That is interesting…but I could see it being annoying, too…:)
Impossible to be annoying with it. Unless you visit the same site coming from your entrecard inbox, you will never see it. You only see it when dropping. You still see the widget on the site no matter what, just in whatever position the website normally places the widget. When the widget “pops”, you have two widgets temporarily. Wouldn’t that be double the advertising, Stan?
See Linda got here ahead of me LOL! This is a great idea, if you don’t already have it in a prominent place. Gives a blogger a bit more freedom to move things around – putting other items closer to the top of their blog. We’ll have to check this out
That is most definitely a great plugin that will make the lives of many bloggers easier because I have personally found myself hunting for the Entrecard widget. I am, however, worried about the usage of the plugin because it just starts moving things around and starts being annoying and annoying the viewers who may stop visiting your site because of it.
Very nice widget, but won’t your Entrecard traffic become useless since most of the people will just click and leave your blog?
Depends on the site. If your articles can put crackheads to sleep, then yes. People will move on quicker than usual. If your headline didn’t grab them from the start, any amount of hiding the widget won’t change that fact. The plugin has no effect on the site unless you are arriving from the Entrecard site.
I was just thinking about how one would do something like this. Can you have the widget on the page but hide it ordinarily so ONLY droppers will see it pop? I really hate that damn thing.
Colleen: you could write a program to do that, but why? The Entrecard widget isn’t that ugly. It’s by far the best social marketing program I have ever tried, and I’ve tried many. The community and management could use a bit of tuning now and then, but I haven’t found anything better to replace it.
I’ve played around with it a bit and it’s pretty good. i would have to agree with Turnip’s sentiments.
i think this pop up is a bit too irritating
Very cool widget! Now, if it would work in Blogger…
I’ve done Tequila Poppers!!
+ tons of em!!

I tried it (in another blog not this one). Maybe it’s cuz I’m using Firefox 3 beta or maybe I just don’t know what I’m doing but it doesn’t POP at all. It just hangs at the top of my page whether or not I’ve come in from EC, and it puts an ugly yellow bar and it really defeats the theme. I tried the Entrecard widget and it just put the thing in the side bar where it was already only uglier. Could it be the theme’s fault? On the one hand I agree w/u Turnip, Entrecard beats all those social networking things because it cuts to the chase but OTOH, I don’t believe the non EC community cares about them. Didn’t give the blog URL cuz I’m going to take it down now. Previously it was fine where it was above the fold. Bleah!
I fixed all of the bugs in it so if you had problems with it come back and download the upgrade.
Thanks Turnip for the post!
The name does make you laugh. I can’t wait to see it. As you know, I have blogger at the moment, but it’ll be fun seeing it on other blogs. When are you going to install it? I can’t wait to see what you’ll find next.

Cheers~

real clever
I want to test it on another blog and see if the CSS can be edited to match my theme
I installed it on another blog I have in the system that didn’t have the card above the fold. See it in action at the download page. After visiting it from my page, click the E in entrecard. Then click the link to return to the site. The 2nd time you will see the widget “pop”
Nice idea. That would sure make life a lot easier for several blogs I’ve seen.
Why was Graham talking about making this plugin illegal?
No idea. It still shows the widget normally. I think it’s under review.
