If I were to take all the words in the dictionary, let you buy a link to one of the words, and charged you $1 per letter for that privilege, would you be interested? I thought not. Such Wiki style directories went out of favor months ago. However, one such page is making the rounds lately called The Big Word Project .
I’m not quite sure how anyone benefits anyone other than the owners of www.thebigwordproject.com. You can’t even resell your “word”. With over 200,0000 common words in the English language, and at $1 per letter a pop, what would I gain by buying a word? When was the last time you bypassed Google to go to www.thebigwordproject.com and see who owned “mesothelioma”. Hats off to the owners for creating a new twist to the Wiki page idea, but I think I’ll pass. If they want to donate the money to charity, I’d reconsider.
I mean, why not name a star after your website. Think how famous you will be if we find life there! Not to mention, you are buying a paid link. Anyone know how Google feels about paid links? Oh, it’s a directory, and how long has it been since directories stopped giving pagerank? I suppose it’s all in good fun, but for a quarter you can ride the pony outside the supermarket instead.
I bought “duh.” I should’ve bought duped, I suppose. But I couldn’t resist. Can’t they sell out all of their words then make it possible for you to sell the words? Maybe not, but I spent $3 to find out. C’mon, duh!
I thought you were joking! I hope you prove me wrong and make millions off of “Duh”. D’oh! might still be available.
Why wouldn’t they let you resell? Makes no sense to me. They take a commission and make bank. Maybe it’s a ponzi scheme. I don’t know.
BTW, I originally was going register “cutarded.” A portmanteau for cute and retarded to give to my girlfriend, but they wouldn’t let me make a word up. Probably saved my relationship.
I just paid for “sucker” and linked to your site
Ha!
Gary: I looked for the pimps and instead found a surprising amount of negative reviews already. My instinct before I started researching the article was exactly as you thought, a few paid reviews plus all the good words going to the top blogs. Instead I found words like “marketing” going to http://www.verticalresponse.com. Seems to be word of mouth making it go viral. Like in entrecard forums, it was the 5 blondes who brought it up.
No hits for duh. Yet. I’ll keep you posted.
I wonder what they will think of next.
That seems like an interesting concept. I doubt it will last very long or have much umph with google.
I think they should have been greedier, and charged for each letter an amount in dollars that corresponded to it’s worth on a scrabble board.
At least that way the purchaser of “sex” would have paid a fairer price.
I like http://www.linkinword.com better.
