My blog is exactly 2 months old and just recently reached an Alexa Rank of 1,500,040, but Google hasn’t given it a pagerank yet. What started out as a single blog, Turnipofpower.com, has now developed into two more sites. Turnip’s Coupon Codes is a coupon code site created about a month ago. Computer Tech News is a computer hardware and software news site that is brand new. Before creating these sites I knew absolutely nothing about WordPress, Adsense, and Affiliates. So how did I do as far as profit and loss in two months? First let’s look at the costs.
Cost Item
$166.80 2 years of hosting at Bluehost.com
$60.00 Yahoo Marketing solutions
$85.00 Google Adwords
$13.00 Display Ad
$326.80 Total Expenses
Profit Item
$35.15 Google Adsense
$141.15 shareasale.com
$34.60 Commission Junction Affiliates
$26.02 Amazon Associates
$236.92 Total Profit
So over the course of 2 months I managed to lose $89.88. However, some of those expenses have to be spread out over time. The actual cost of the website for 2 months is only $13.90. The cost of the Display ad for 2 months works out to $8.67, making my total expenses $167.57. Adwords has an unused $10.65 balance. Using these calculations, I show a net profit of $79.98. I’m sure the tax man will grab his share of that as well.
Still, a hobby that makes me $40.00 a month isn’t bad. I expect that number to remain about the same. My Yahoo budget will drop to $0, as will my display ad cost. After Christmas, my Google Adwords will probably drop to about $20.00 a month in expenses. My affiliate profits will also go down post Christmas, but Adsense should go up from the traffic on the new tech site. If Google ever ranks my site, I will make a decision then if I want to go to the payperpost route. I probably won’t since my organic traffic is very good.
Now the question everyone asks, “Can you quit your day job?”. Not for $40.00. Now if I had 100 domains, and pulled in $4000.00 a month, it might be possible. But that sure would be a lot of niche blogging even if setting up the sites only took an hour or two for someone experienced. Also, things on the net change quickly, revenue streams change, and markets dry up. Even adjusting bids on Pay Per Click Adwords and making landing pages can be a full time job if you have enough of them.
