Last night I started working on a business card for my blog. Having a business card is a requirement to attend conventions and expos. Although I’ve been to medical device conferences before, I’ve never attended a blog or internet related trade show. I think visiting one of these shows will be a great chance to network with other bloggers and marketing companies. Below is my current design which I’ll have printed locally when the time draws near.

So why am I posting about upcoming conventions? Three reasons!
- I’d like to find out who else plans to attend these shows, either as an exhibitor or attendee. Maybe we could make plans to meet up, have lunch, travel there together, or whatever.
- I’d love to score a free pass to any of these trade shows and write about the event. (Maybe Entrecard can sponsor a “win lunch with the Turnip” contest)
- I’d like to know what conventions my readers have attended and their experiences, good or bad.

I just voted for your excellent blog for Bloggers Choice Awards.
Could you please return the favor at:

Thanks,

I would love to attend one of these types of expos, but have no idea what I’d need to qualify. Would I need to have made a lot of money, have a lot of traffic?
This sounds really interesting to me, but I probably wouldn’t be able to go for a while. I’m just starting to get into blogging for real.. instead of payperpost junk!
I would love to hear of all the things that you find there and especially of things that you learn!
The Search Marketing expo and the Ad:Tech New York dates are the only ones that I might be able to attend. That is if I can get my passport sorted out. I would have to create a new business card but it does sound like it could be a lot of fun to meet some of the people on the other side of the blog.
I would like to go although traveling together may be difficult considering I am in Canada, but I would be happy to meet other bloggers that plan on attending. It would be an excellent way to socialize with other bloggers with out typing.
Keep us posted.
From my perspective, the web 2.0 is the most interesting conference because it most likely will feature the newest social networking companies. The affiliate summit is more for companies that feature banner ads. Those are the two I’m most excited about. There are no requirements to attending other than paying the entrance fee. Usually there are two levels of fees. The higher price fee is to attend all the conferences and listen to the guest speakers. The lower fee is to walk around the exhibit hall. To me, that’s the fun part! For some conventions, you can get in free, other conventions cost a lot just to walk around. I believe the cheapest price I saw was a $100 fee for one of the above conventions.
I think instead of business cards you should have stickers made, and affix them to actual turnips and hand THOSE out at the conventions. That’ll get you noticed!
I think I’m going to put up on eBay an auction where I pay someone to take a picture with Turnip. Is that something someone would be interested in?
Carole, they have a rule against bringing in your own food and drink!
Stan: I will be holding a turnip impersonator contest to coincide with your photo contest. Make sure youo only pay for a real photo and not a fake.
These sorts of things can be amazingly productive and energizing. Somewhat off-topic, I attended a writers conference a few years ago, held in a hotel. At the same time, there was a clown convention taking place in the meeting rooms to our right, so the halls were full of clowns in full dress and make-up, riding tiny bicycles and walking invisible dogs. One afternoon another group took over the rooms to our left: Sistahs in Hats. If you’re not familiar, it seemed to be a group of Black women wearing fancy dresses with HUGE matching hats–some so large they wouldn’t fit in the passenger area of a car. We left that conference with enough material to write for years….
Luckygirl: Sounds like crashing a good party. I’ve been to a few shows in the past just to collect free pens and and other swag. Sure beats a day in the office.
Thanks for writing about these. I live in NYC and was disappointed to have to miss the BlogHer conference last weekend in San Francisco.
The Web 2.0 Expo looks great, but I would only do the Expo Hall only of Expo Hall Plus because anything else is a fortune. I loved when I used to go to conferences for work and they paid. At least I won’t have any travel expenses. I can even walk from my Apt.
Ok guys, color me stupid, but what exactly does one do at a blog expo? Free pens? Networking? Do you tell everyone what it is you blog about, or how you make money? Just curious.
There are many reasons depending upon your relation to blogging. From your point of view, it would be a chance to meet people in the industry and other bloggers. You can attend conferences and learn things, you can ask questions at the expo, see what’s new, and meet the people behind the various companies. For myself, I would interview people, sign up for every possible program I could to test them, maybe videotape the conference, and write like 20 articles from my experiences there. What exactly is the point of going to a party or going to the mall if you don’t plan on buying anything? For some people it’s fun, for others, pointless.
I hope to attend the Web 2.0 expo, but I’ll probably do the expo hall only. Their twitter profile, w2e_NY08, is offering a free expo pass or $100. discount using code webny08mc1 (might only be valid until 7/28). Since I’m in NJ, this is more convenient than all those damn West Coast events. Hope to see you there.
@Carole: Love the turnip idea!
Tim, that coupon code was a fantastic deal! I think it might only be good until Monday, though. I signed up for the Sept. 16th Web 2.0 conference. I’m also a jersey guy, looks like I’ll be taking the ferry there.
I’ve only been to one Internet conference. The best thing about it was the people that I met. Some of us have kept in contact and recently established a mastermind group.
We critique each others sites, explore new tools and services that interest us, and generally learn and encourage one another.
Anytime you can build those kind of relationships from attending a conference, it’s money and time well spent.
Plastic turnips with your sticker on them, then.
How did you come to be called the turnip of power anyway?
Signed up for the web 2.0 conference, Expo only pass. Wired magazine had a $100 off coupon code see since pass is 100 it is free!!
Looking forward to it.
