The third edition of Free E-book Friday presents a title called The Yellow book Of Turbo Marketing Secrets available here. Unlike most eBooks, this one claims to have been handwritten. That explains the abundant use of bold type, italics, and colored type. The author must have used his entire box of crayons on this work judging buy the amount of times he wrote his affiliate link alone. By continually switching between comically dumbing down things you already knew, and then sadly making up his own facts, this author creates one of the great literary works of our online marketing generation.
Written in 2005, the author uses the analogy of Warcraft to making money online. No, not “World of Warcraft”, but the old gather wood and gold “Warcraft”. Which is about as hip as saying “Hey remember those settlers in Civ 1?”. WoW was released in 2004, the old Warcraft in 1994. Sure, the series was updated in 2002 and 2003 as Warcraft 3, but you have to wonder how a “successful” marketer misses the bigger picture.
Then the author resorts to his own version of what I like to call “The Sam Freedom Hook”. The basic premise of this hook is to combine a ridiculous possibility with doubt of your ability to handle the situation. You see this countless times. “If I gave you the winning lottery numbers, you wouldn’t know what to do with he money.” “If you made $5000 a week from my ebook the first month, you couldn’t go back to making only $1000 a week the next month”. This time the hook is “Don’t make the mistake of earning so much money and then not reinvesting it to make more money”. Implying of course that you will make a killing and then be lazy and satisfied at that point. The author’s key to making more money: “buying knowledge and tools”.
Of course that violates the golden rule of Internet marketing “NEVER PAY FOR INTERNET MARKETING ADVICE”. Pay for web design, coding, hosting, advertising, but never pay for something you can Google. The best part of this eBook is pages 14-20 where you learn a little about creating a niche. The rest just repeats the hook that you have to invest money into their system to make more money. “The system” turns out to be a bunch of autospam websites and software you set up after writing your own niche eBook. You’d do better in the long run making free Blogspot blogs all day, stealing content, and slapping some ads on there.
Previous editions of Free eBook Friday are available here: Free E-Book Friday #1, Free E-Book #2. Just to remind you, the author states “You may distribute this eBook in any way you like, however the content may not be reproduced in any way”. That means don’t take it and publish it as articles on your website.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback **********I love the part about the “Sam Freedom Hook”. He mentioned you in his latest post too, did you know. Did you guys talk about this exchange-mention?
^_^ Ok I think im downloading the ebook now. I suck at the old warcraft because the voice saying all my troops are losing is just soooo sexy.
Woobie, No I didn’t notice. I have Sam’s EC page bookmarked and not his main homepage. I’ll go check it out now. Once I’ve drank my morning coffee, I’ll be in the mood for a bit of controversey.
I like, “The Sam Freedom Hook” too, although I’m not familiar with the author. Which is a shame, since he evidently created “one of the great literary works of our online marketing generation.” But, I’m learning…
Have a great week-end Turnip~
Ann
Annie: Sam is less active in EC than before, but he still knows how to stir the pot. You’d know his EC card when you see it. Here’s a link to his blog: http://controversialmarketing.blogspot.com/
The “golden rule of Internet marketing to never pay for internet marketing advice”?
Am wondering which million dollar earner came up with such a “golden rule”… Never heard of that one (unless from poor people perhaps, but I usually don’t take that type of advice from poor people anyway.)
Sounds like one should never pay for fitness advice, or one should never pay for financial advice, or strange things like that.
Those people who still remember libraries the same ones who remember how to learn things without paying some expert for a miracle solution.
And no, you should not be buying that fitness or diet crap either. Fad dieting will be just as harmful to your body, in the same way that your “must have, money making DVD” will be financially harmful in the short run.
The 3 eBooks I’ve given away for free can also be purchased online. Guess what their real secret is? Finding some sucker stupid enough to buy the eBook. Then they too can become a schill and resell it.
Maybe if I huckstered up my free ebooks like “Tired of working 170 hours a week? While dining in Tahati last week I swung a deal with Dr. Smarty pants, a very rich dude you are too poor to have heard of. He’s letting me put my name on his DVD for TWO DAYS ONLY! That’s right! For two days only you can get the secrets of marketing for only $100. After that the price will return to $200. So order now because supplies are limited.”
I think your advice about not paying is right on the nose. The only place I would consider spending money on marketing is a well-respected college/university, but, if you want, you can buy the books they read in class without the classes.
Devour information from *respected* sources.
Stan: Of course. You could even buy a marketing book from the 50’s and get the same basic advice. Writing good copy never changes and sex appeal still sells. In fact, the only thing that has changed is that it is now EASIER than ever to get information. Buy your books on amazon.com. Guess what, they have a whole internet marketing section. At least that way you arent getting 85 pages of someone elses affiliate links for your hard earned money. I mean if any of these scams worked, wouldn’t you just follow the advice in your own book instead? Take that money, retire, and go away.
Turnip’s right, if you’re going to do a DIY, dont pay for advice. Do a how-to search and you’ll be amazed at the number of articles that will come up: free ones, people talking about their experience. Put it together in your mind and process, then act on YOUR deductions.
You pay for service not advice. If you suddenly think that “blah, thinking about it makes me hurt” then don’t do a DIY, hand your keys over and let the other person do everything, then pay for the service.
Got it. Thank you, as usual Turnip~ And again, have a great week-end~
Ann
Thanks, will read it later.
