Why do I let my good nature get in the way of common sense? After reading this excellent post Blog Contests are Kind of Lame at 45n5.com, I knew participating in other people’s contest benefits nobody but the other blog. Sure I’ll get a few backlinks in exchange for giving up 30 days of ad space next to my Entrecard ad. Meanwhile, the blog hosting the contest gets 10x the exposure, the rss and email subscribers, the technorati favs, and all the page hits and comments. Like memes, I’m usually a good sport and play along because I’m a decent guy until angered.
So I agreed to donate that top 125×125 ad spot next to my Entrecard for 30 days to whomever wins my part of The Hochstadt.com Party Contest! I won’t be posting the entire list of prizes because it’s far too long (more links than I am comfortable posting), with a “monetary value of more than $7,000+ (!!) and exactly 66,666ec”. Winning is pretty easy as all you have to do is blog about the contest, subscribe, and comment. I am a big fan of winning contests, so go right ahead and win all the stuff you can. Contest ends on May 1st, so enter soon.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback **********Turnip, which one of those prizes you would be interested in?
I want some of Max’s Beer Stocks!
I’d take the $50 paypal cash.
Sometimes it seems there are way too many contests. I haven’t participated in any, nor do i have a desire to do so.
I wonder how many are really successful? Is it really worth putting on a contest?
Most seem to require the participant to subscribe to the contest-holder’s RSS feed. I prefer to work for my subscribers than to but them. That is just my 2 cents.
Paul, they do work to increase RSS subscribers, which is why that stat has become meaningless. People sign up to win and never read the feed. The worst contest offenders award the prize to some friend or an identity they made up themselves.
I disagree with that contests benefit no-one else but the host. It depends on how you structure a contest, and it can be a great way for promoting the products and/or services of the sponsors, AND there are a whole bunch of happy winners!
Also, the sponsors do get not only “a few” but a bunch of backlinks as well as new and more traffic. Since when is that bad? I can show you several blogs of sponsors where they got additional traffic and comments due to their sponsorship. And, if they set it up intelligently, they can build new long-term relationships and get new customers due to their participation.
Additionally, of course the host gets more exposure since s/he has the most work to do! You as a sponsor simply say what you’re going to donate and then you sit back and watch with a cocktail in your hand, while the host has all the hard work, every day.
Bottom line, I personally see well structured contests as a win-win-win situation.
Either way, thank you very much for your participation, Turnip!

P.S. “Memes” and “taggies” are another thing. I get tagged occasionally but decline my participation as I see them as a way of trying to fool the Search Engines and Technorati, instead of building long-term relationships.
eh…I never win blog contests…so I don’t try to enter them. I do, however, win real-life things, so I’m always up for a raffle ticket….
Contest are a way for hustlers to keep hustling their useless dvd,e-books,these guys are laughing all the way to the bank, and those prizes and dvd and all that are worthless.
I have to agree with Marcus on this one. While there seems to be more contests out there than ever, it is usually a “win-win” proposition for all involved. Also, the contest organizer should get more of the benefit since that person is doing the work to put everything together and lead the effort. Besides everyone getting valuable backlinks and traffic for their blog(s), it’s an opportunity to build networking relationships with other blog publishers. That’s why I participate.
