Authoring several blogs and participating in various Internet communities I tend to notice certain patterns. I’ve met fine upstanding people, most of which share certain traits. Then I’ve met my share of inconsiderate losers who also share certain traits. This isn’t an end all list, just my way to blow off some steam today.
- Losers jump to conclusions and publish them as facts on the Internet. Winners send you a private message asking your side of the story.
- Losers are too lazy to Google an obvious answer. Winners attempt to find the answer themselves, then come to you because they think you might be able to help.
- Losers begrudge you for making a referral fee or commission, preferring you get nothing even though they are going to buy the product anyway. Winners ask their friends if they have any links to any products they buy online.
- Losers assume your time has no value. Winners understand time spent helping them is a favor.
- Losers think because something is called the “Internet” they can take a shit in your livingroom and say “what’s the big deal”? Winners respect other people’s forums, websites, blogs, whatever.
- Losers assume because they have already failed at what you do, that you are dishonest. Winners understand why you are succeeding and discuss which ideas work.
- Losers blindly copy every idea they see, usually word for word. Winners analyze the idea to see if it works, and then look to improve upon it while at the same time making it different from the original.
- Losers try to attract attention without substance. Winners try to be a useful resource.
- Losers think one tool will miraculously do everything. If their hammer won’t tighten a screw, they suspect a conspiracy and demand the hammer be changed to accommodate them. Winners understand each tool has a job to do, nothing more and nothing less.
- Losers gleefully participate and promote scams, hoping to take others like they were taken. Winners give an honest opinion and warn others of scams.
- Losers blame everyone and everything for their mistakes except themselves. Winners admit they goofed and try to see where they went wrong.
- Losers write in l33t speak because they just don’t care. Winners proofread and correct errors out of respect to their readers.
OK, You needn’t take it any further sir. You’ve proved to me that all the Ultra-Violence and killing is wrong and terribly wrong. I’ve learned my lesson, sir. I see now what I’ve never seen before. I’m cured. Praise God!
End of rant. Feel free to add your own.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback **********Very well said. I’m relatively new to blogging (8 months) but I’ve recognized many of the points you listed above. I chose to be one of the winners, and hope it comes through on my blogs.
[...] A-list bloggerers walk on. Oh the irony. Catch Turnip’s post here: <a href=”http://turnipofpower.com/2008/04/01/internet-winners-vs-internet-losers/”>Internet Winners vs Internet [...]
Losers take the easy way. Winners take the harder way, learn, and are better for it.
RE: links to products. You have to depend on good karma. Example, if I were to click your Bluehost affiliate link and sign up through you, I wouldn’t resent you for your cash in. I’d pay the same anyway, and i’m actually lucky that you even offered to help me set up.
Envy is what makes others delete the affiliate number from links they click. Like “why should you earn from my purchase?!?” it’s wrong. And karma is watching.
Sweet karma.
Hrm, interesting page, the overall layout and design of your page is nice and your articles are not bad either.
When you get a chance, feel free to drop by mine at http://www.hedgeagainstspeculation.com
I also I have monthly contests, so I would really appreciate it if you donated or entered
I especially appreciate your point about losers trying anything and everything willy nilly instead of making a plan and sticking to it.
You are so on target with this rant! Good post!
Losers click on through… Winners stop to read, comment and wish you a good day
Good call Heather in BC!! I got a pm from a loser this morning, so sometimes the tell tale signs get mixed:-)
Mommie
I did too today Mommy, except mine had profanity in it directed at me, a dead give away.
I had to laugh about 2 of these…the one about respecting others’ blogs, and the last one, about writing and proofreading. I have a friend who has to use a tracker on her site specifically to track comments from her two nasty sisters. They always post anonymously, as though they don’t think she can find out who they are.
And the grammar comment; grammatical errors are my biggest pet peeve EVER. Spell check much? I posted a “blog thing” recently about They’re there their. A friend commented about how spelling and punctuation were her pet peeves. This is the same friend who uses apostrophes incorrectly in EVERY post. Add to that the fact that she has yet to spell ridiculous correctly (when she mentions that something is redeculous, I always post back, “I agree that is RIDICULOUS”, hoping she’ll get the hint.
I know way too many losers.
Great rant, Turnip, and oh so very true.
You win.
