I have 3 Google search pages on this site. Why? It’s a slow but steady money earner. So how much can a low traffic site expect to make? Let’s look at the numbers. Turnipofpower.com is now 6 months old. In that time I earned roughly $35 off of 800 searches. That’s $35 towards the $100 you need to earn from Google before you get paid. Search provides 31% of my total Google income.
Here is the 3 part strategy I used. First I added a search box at the end of the comments. My thinking is that people that arrive from Google are likely to leave by using Google. Let’s face it, if they get to the bottom of the page, they have to do something. Hopefully they search.
Secondly, I have a site search on the toolbar that displays the search results using my site, not Google’s. It’s a cool trick easily accomplished using the MightySearch WordPress plugin. Check out the results here: Search Page
Finally, I have a work-safe Google Search Page. Ever see someone use Google Search as their home page? I sure have. Politely suggest they use your search page instead. This is a nice way for people to support your site without cheating Google. (Please feel free to bookmark and use this search page) You know the type, those friends and relatives who blindly click your ads over and over in an attempt to secretly help you.
For you experts, you can check out a cool trick I almost got to work. If you go to the search engine drop down box in firefox, you will see Turnipofpower.com offered as a choice now. Pretty cool! It almost worked, but not quite.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback **********I’m confused. How do you make money off a search? Say I were to search “reindeer” in the top search field. You would make money on that?
Advertisers pay for certain search terms via Google AdWords. When someone clicks on a sponsored result, you receive money. When they click on a normal result, you don’t.
This tip is in a world of its own. I even checked the Firefox Search drop down, and for sure, Turnip was listed as one of the search engine
I’m really impressed.
Thanks for dropping by at my site consistently. Cheers.
You are so smart when it comes to this whole thing. I want you to know I wrote a funny story using some of my fave links on my site and you are in it. Love for you to stop be and read it. See ya
Etta: You might want to drink a little less Debontherocks next time. Funny story. BIG turnipofpower is the Best turnipofpower.
I’m thinking of re-adding Google search to my site again. I noticed that my searches usually yielded a higher CTR for ads than regular Adsense ads.
People use Google search without thinking, but trained not to ever click on an ad out of fear. You won’t get rich, but reaching that $100 payout sure isn’t easy for new blogs and every bit helps.
Okay, so I’ve used custom G search on about 3 pages, with excellent results for about 4 months. Aesthetically it would make things more consistent if I had a box on each page, but am convinced it would make my CTR go down. Undecided, but I like your idea of adding one at the end of comments.
Glad you are feeling better and got the health issue sorted out.
OK I believe that you have something here.
Thanks for the insight,I will give the Google search box another try. It had done next to nothing in the month or two I had it on my blog but I’m sure my traffic count is lower than yours. So as I slowly increase traffic I will see where it goes. Your also helping push up the priority of moving my blog off Blogger and onto Wordpress, just have to find the time to do it.
Thanks for this!! I’ve forgotten to add Google searches on my new theme
and it’s been months since I switched to a new theme..argh
This is a great tip, Turnip. I have google search on my page, but didn’t think about putting it in the comment area. I’m bookmarking this for when I have time to make some updates to my site.
Some really nice tricks you’ve mentioned. I’m gonna try them on my site.
Thanks for sharing!
