I used to have a nice computer system; Core 2 Duo Processor, Nvidia 8800 GTS Graphics Card, 4 GB 1066 Ram. Then one sunny morning the power went out momentarily without warning. When it came back on, my system was dead. I quickly narrowed the cause to one of my memory modules blowing. Now I have the same system, but only 2 GB RAM.
My first reaction was to curse everyone and everything in sight. Then I decided it was time to improve the home office. What I needed was a combination Uninterruptible Power Supply / Line Conditioner. The UPS part acts as a battery, keeping your computer running during a total powerloss. The line conditioner part keeps the power at a steady level, protecting against brown outs (too little power) or surges (too much power).
The trick is finding one that is dependable, has enough power to handle your system, and is affordable. I ended up purchasing the Tripp Lite HT1000UPS 1000VA USWith LCD for only $126.50 new. These things weigh a ton, so always factor in shipping.
My Tripplite unit arrived and set up easily. It had no trouble handling my 750watt power supply and 22″ monitor. You can stand it up vertically or horizontally as shown. Don’t bother connecting all the audio/video shielding unless you’re running a home theater system. Since installation I’ve averaged one bad power condition per day, not once losing my desktop. A small price to pay for a little extra piece of mind.

Perfect timing, thanks! We just had a storm here in New Jersey the other day. The power blinked off and on several times in a few minutes, at 4am. The old Compaq PC I’m using as a server won’t reboot headless, so I had to grab a monitor from the other room, hook it up, reboot, then return the monitor. Did I mention it was 4am? What a PITA!
The Tripplite sounds like the perfect solution. Thanks for sharing the research.
Tim, we share the horrors of Jersey.
I have experienced a few power interruptions, but so far my systems have been able to come back up.
I’m looking into a UPS since they are definitely worth the investment.
That’s why I’m terribly happy to have a live in computer guy! Not only does he fix everything, but I can blame him for everything as well. System seems to work well for me!

A UPS is a good idea but also once you get your UPS hooked up you need to test your setup. You want to make sure you have the proper parts of your system plugged into the UPS and see if it will take the load. Also you need to test periodically since the batteries get weak and fail over time. The reason I mention this is one of my older UPSs is in need of new batteries even though it appears to be working but if you pull the UPS wall plug down my system goes down immediately (I think the batteries are only good for about 3 years depending on usage).
I really need to get some kind of power back up. I’ve used BackUps before, and they never seemed to work right (though I now know that only one part of the strip will use the back up, the other part is just surge protected)….this sounds like a good one to me!
Thanks - you always provide such useful info here.
I was just thinking about this the other day when I was using my laptop and we blew a fuse in my apartment.I am definitely going to get a UPS when I get my next PC up and running. I am a little surprised that desktops don’t come with some sort of battery in case of power outages.
It’s been a while since you have posted anything so I am just dropping in to say I hope everything is ok
Also, checking in to see if you’re all right. Drop me a line when you’re up to it.
You okay? It’s been over a week….we’re worried about you!!!!
I so strongly agree with this, and so many people and companies by pass such an important thing. 2 years ago we had a huge brownout - black out in November on the eve of Edmund Fitzgerald - and lost so much data at work.. they still do not have this in place.
I can only talk til I am blue!
Where ya at man?
Yea…where are you Turnip?
hi. hope everything is fine. have a good weekend. i’ve got some awards for you. hope you like them.
Hey… 2GB of that memory was free, so at least you weren’t out any money… LOL!
No money, but it’s like getting used to a Harley, and then driving a moped around town. I won that 2gb of RAM at the BigBruin.com football contest. I don’t know If I should buy a 1 gb replacement module, or 2x 2gb to replace everything.
