Do you like to read blog posts and comment? Most people don’t; not on this blog, anyway. With Entrecard now 5000 droppers strong, only 80 people have made 3 comments or more on Turnipofpower.com. Wouldn’t it be great to target these people that do more than drop and run? How do you locate these commenters?
Everyone has their own strategies. Some market within their own niche, some pester the new people, others target the most active or popular cards. You could just dig through every back post on this blog, or settle for the top 10 listed in my sidebar widget. Well, I’ve gone ahead and tried to make things easier on you by creating a list.
Almost 225 people drop cards on my site daily. Of those, only about 80 of them are regular commenters. For that very reason I’ve created a list of bookmarks containing the names of those sites that comment often. Rather than a reciprocal dropper list, consider it a list of reciprocal commenters. Nobody on the list is required to comment. They may never comment again. But past behavior has distinguished these few Entrecarders out of the 5000.
How do you get this list? Simple, sign up for my mailing list at the top right of my page. The list is managed by Feedburner. Once a day I will check for new signups and email each new person a welcome letter and attach to it a zipped html zip file containing the list of 80 commentors. After that, you will only receive email if I make a new post. No post = no email. I don’t believe in email marketing. I don’t sell my list. Let’s be honest here, I already have the email addresses of all my commenters. I could simply sign them up myself for a mailing list, but that would be unethical. Obviously, you can unsubscribe any time just as easily.
Once you see the list, you will recognize 90% of the names, since almost all are on my list of 300. For obvious reasons, I like my commenters and felt they needed to be recognized separately. I’m much more likely to go to their blogs and comment knowing they have previously made the effort on my behalf. Maybe you too can visit their blogs and strike up a relationship. In the future, I will update this list and I hope it grows. Maybe we can share and compare lists down the road.

**********I hope I made the list. ^_^ ToP is definitely comment-worthy!
I may not comment every time but I always stop and read the posts!
Reading is fine too! But the secret is after 3 comments, all the links go from nofollow to follow.
225 drops/day on your site? That is probably the most I have ever gotten. In the past month the highest is 191 with an average of around 125.
I must be doing something wrong.
Gary, your card’s ad price is 255ec, Divide by 2 and that’s about 128 visitors average over the last 5 days. With a PagerRank of 3, and Alexa of 69,099, you must be doing something right as well. As for getting more drops, I notice you aren’t as active in the Entrecard forums as you used to be. Could be a factor if fewer drops are a concern of yours.
Great idea! I like how you mix effective marketing with unique ideas and manage to not stray into “black hat” practices to do it.
Ah, I just noticed that I have yet to subscribe to your site via email.
Now is the right time to do so. :p
Wot: Thanks, I checked with another marketer to see if this idea was lame or not. They gave it the thumbs up. Originally I had planned to give out free E-books, but I’m not quite started writing one. When I do have a contest, I’ll be sure to include everyone on the mailing list already as well. I have a nice backup hard drive to give away soon, just waiting for the right opportunity.
I read all your posts anyhow, why not.

I stop by every day any way so I don’t know why I have never signed up. What a great idea!
I’m a bit confused by this — you’re going to send out the top commenter’s WEBSITE addresses, right?
Do you expect them to comment on each others sites? Is that what this lure is for? I think I can see (or get) their website addresses, too, so this email list would save me, what two minutes?
Although it’s a good idea on the surface, I’m not sure what benefit I would get by either being ON the list or having it since my site is vastly different from yours. I wouldn’t expect very many if any of your commenters to be even really interested in reading my site much less commenting on a post there. You ARE promoting this as a benefit to people commenting, right?
So, now you have my 2¢ worth for whatever thats worth to you.
I expect as people get more used to interacting online more comments will be made. The US is much more intereactive compared to European users. (from my experience) I’m sure in 5 years leaving comments will be second nature for most people. Some people adopt a 100% communication policy and they always get the respect they are due. A good example would be a Youtuber who replys to all of his comments - very impressive.
This is my first post. Why? Because the idea makes sense! This is what blogging is all about, keep up the great posts and inventive ideas.
Cheers
I am just getting into the entrecard thing today - you seem to be a recognized authority, so props to you.
And my site is coded by hand so I could not get comments if i wanted to. So I guess I have to check the ppv of the entrecard traffic, you know?
You are right in that you should treat your commenters right–they are your most engaged readers. But if I can only drop a card on 300 of 5000 a day, I should be very selective of who I visit, and choose sites that I either like/learn from or who I think would like to visit me.
Alright, I guess I am busted. I read here almost daily, since I like your writing style, objective thinking and topics you cover. After joining Entrecard about two months ago, I am only now beginning to pick up the pace with comments on blogs I like since i now have some time invested in them, so you’ll see me more.
Margaret: I can think of a few people who either would like to be on the list, or use the list. If a person has limited time to drop, they want to drop on those people who are most active in the community. Some people reciprocate drops, but they never read or comment. I already offer a list of 300 sites that should appeal to the pure dropper. As I said in the post above “you could just dig through every back post on this blog, or settle for the top 10 listed in my sidebar widget”. There’s 154 articles and 1006 total comments. Maybe 300 of the comments deleted by filters. Would you have preferred the lure to be 10cr and a raffle for 1000cr more?
Great idea - I’m in!!! Just signed up for your RSS emails
What a wonderful idea!! I always try to make an attempt to read a couple posts of the blogs that I drop my card at but sometimes thats not always possible but I am guilty of not commenting near as often as I should.
I’ve been trying to catch myself on the commenting list for a while now.
That’s a really good ratio though. That’s 1 out of 3 from Entrecard.
I think it depends on the blog. Some blogs are really nichey so even if you want to show support, it’s hard because you know nothing about the topic.
In general, I think MMO sites and web topics get the most comments because thats the common thread amongst bloggers.
Stan: I could be a nice guy and simply edit your old posts to all point to your new domain, or be mean and point them to a competitor!
What about those of us who already subscribe but choose not to subscribe by email?
I love reading what you have to say, because you make entrecard simplified for a dummy like me (who just wants people to come read her blog and comment from time to time.). I have noticed that my numbers went up at Entrecard since you put me over there on the right in your favorite links, so I KNOW you’ve helped me generate some traffic. I’ve seen many new names commenting on my blog, and I know they’re clicking by on Entrecard. I have you on Sage, the RSS feeder from Firefox, which is why I didn’t subscribe to your email or RSS…but I’ll be going to get your emails anyway….better safe than sorry (sometimes Sage gets cranky and gives me parse errors!)!
Great List, Thanks.
As someone before me said, you can only make so many drops, and I only have so much time in the day!
Thanks again.
(Plus I’m thrilled to see I’m on the list!)
Thanks Linda, It’s comments like yours that finally made me realize my niche. People that want to market their blogs and possibly monetize them, but only if things can be kept simple. Let the SEO experts argue about the supertechnical stuff while I stick to basics here.
Ben, you could always join for a day and then unsubscribe, or simply email me for a copy of the list. Either way im mailing it out manually.
I stop by every day too, and I’m much better at reading than at commenting…
This is a great idea. I’ve had some time restraints lately personally, and haven’t been taking the time to comment often, but I do read your posts every day when I drop a card. You have great content and I’ve learned many things here. Keep up the great work.
Chris
I’m with Ben and some others, I have your RSS, but don’t want it via email.
No, I don’t want 10 or even 10,000 ec for reading your blog. I want content. What would I do with the credits? Give them away myself or spend them on advertising on other people’s blogs. I’ll do that anyway — it’ll just take me longer doing it on my own than by winning one of the many contests throughout the EntreCard system.

I am guilty of not stopping by! I read on another blog how much value is over here, so I decided to take a moment and do some reading! Excellent source here.
I have noticed when I do my daily drops and find an interesting site and I do comment, the majority of people answer your comment on their blog and thats the end of it. Does that have any value?
Great idea. I’m always looking to learn.
I actually prefer e-mail for the blogs I’m tracking closely just my personal preference.
Good idea. Turning fly-by-night card droppers into regular readers/commenters is the hard part, and the part that offers the most value.
I appreciate that you always return my drops, and I come back to see what is new on your blog and to return the drop back. I have subscribed to your feed, and I have commented, but I would like to see some other content other than contests. What can I learn from you? What can you learn from my blog iPentimento?
I have to agree, the comment rate from Entrecarders is not very high but I still feel it is better than the same rate from some of the other social media sites. Just yesterday somebody Stumbled one of my articles and I received about 1500 visitors to that particular post. You guessed correctly, not one single comment amongst all of those visits. The EC guys might be doing better than what we thought.
Guilty as charged. I’m here reading and dropping quite often and I almost never comment.
I like what you have to say, so I’ll sign up for your feed by email.
What you said was so true and Iam working on the comment issue.
I admit that I rarely comment myself unless I have something to add to the conversation, or more often, something funny and/or stupid. I too would like more comments on my blog and I think this is a great idea that you have. That being said, beyond the obvious answer of more reader interaction, well — why?
Anyway, love the blog — all the best.
Turnip, you rock. Your first time commenter’s are abundant on this post!
I wanted to ask you about something…my PR got annihilated (it was only a 2, and I only had it for 3 months…but still) and I wanted to ask if your PR got Google-squished? I feel like there is nothing to be done about it, but I’m disappointed.
Incidentally, I’m subscribed to your feed, but not by e-mail. Just your excerpts are always enough to bring me in.
Hello Turnip,
I have not commented before-and have not dropped that many cards either-sorry. Still I come bearing sort of good news. You have won 500 ECs in my Small Entrecard Contest. I know I said 900, but I decided to split the prize and give half to Woobie. Give me an email address and I will send you the Entrecard credits.
Congrats
Descartes
I guess we are a little guilty of the “drop and run” mentality with Entrecard but I can say I have found a few really good sites that I otherwise would not have discovered on my own and it is a great way to generate new ideas.
great idea - not sure why someone didn’t think of that sooner… lol..
Surprised that I’m #2 on the list.
This post has given me some ideas. I did the same with my own (created comment bookmarks) and I’m going to start looking through yours and see what happens.
This post made me comment on your blog. I’m your reader ‘Turnip’ and, I’m not one of drop-N-runs. I read, if it interests. else I leave(no run, please, run is bit offending as like fugitives)
besides, people have stopped blogging, they are just writing about credits/contests blah blah, which is very discouraging for ppl like me to stay on the page. That’s cheap publicity making of own self. I pay attention to post like this where bloggers talk about themselves and their problems, moments. ..
Thanks for reading my words.
Hi Turnip,
I have been in and our of your blog a bunch of time. I am just getting the balance of trying to keep my blog post up and Entrecard surf, only comment on blog who have something I want to reply on. Check into forums and communities I have joined since I stated my blog. Your blog is always loaded full of info. Got you on my Google reader. Now signed up for subscribe by email. I have to same problem with people just dropping card and not leaving comments.
I’m sorry, Turnip! I’m ashamed of myself. I’m guilty of dropping my card and running on to the next blog without reading your prose. I feel so promiscuous.
I’ve taken a good look around your web site now and I like what I see. Will you forgive me for having ignored you in the past? Please?
