Stootsi.com recently ran a contest where you had to write a caption for a given photo.  The photo was of Robin Williams picketing during the writers strike.  I’ve included my 3rd place entry as the caption.  BTW, my entry is taken from a Truman Capote quote talking about Jack Kerouac.  In reference to Kerouac’s “On The Road“, Capote said “That’s not writing, that’s typing“.

Even though he went on strike, Robin never did learn the difference between “writing” and “typing”.

If any of you ever take a writing course at a university, be sure to use that quote when you sit around the circle and anonymously criticize each other’s short stories.  Everyone knows who wrote what based upon style alone.  Some jerk will take the time to rip your story because you previously pointed out some major flaw in one of their stories, like how a normal teenage kid wouldn’t use the phrase “Tempest Fugit” nor the word “excoriate”.  They will think themselves one up on you until you drop the writing/typing quote bomb.  Even better, if your professor is gay, drop Capote’s name as well.  Sample squash dialogue below for major brownie points:

Professor:  How about you, Mr. Turnip? Anything to add about Mr. Driscoll’s Piece?
Turnip: As Capote would have said “That’s not writing, that’s typing“.
