Battlefield 2 ranks as one of my favorite games ever.  I give it top ratings for graphics, gameplay, controls, and strategy.  That is not to say the game is without fault.  A lack of updates, and releasing expansion packs, special forces, and 2142 at the expense of the original playerbase all hurt.  Hacks and exploits still creep into the game, all while punkbuster causes issues with honest players getting kicked.  Yet I still continue to play because nothing better has come along in my opinion, though I am always looking for the next “battlefield 2″.  What follows is my Wish List for what I would like to see change in the next release in this franchise.  Most of these are nitpicks, and not sweeping changes.   Also, I realise there are many excellent mods that may contain some of the following features.

  1. A friends list so I can see where friends are playing, a button to join that server, and a retry function to automatically join when a space becomes available.  This is a no brainer that most games already have.
  2. I’d like to be able to run a script that inputs all my settings.  Having to reset my mini-map resolution each session for every vehicle is annoying.  Same as having to select my favorite weapon from the 3 available choices.  Also, the “create squad command” should create a squad using a pre-specified name.  It should then invite everyone in the server on my friends list to my squad.
  3. I’d like to see vehicles lockable to squad members only.  A well coordinated squad hops out of a jeep or helicopter to get a flag, and takes it under fire.  Then some clown spawns there and jumps into the vehicle, leaving a squad member behind without transportation.  Or what about the times you are defending in a truck, and someone hops in and takes you on a joyride around the map until they hit a mine?  Same goes for the planes and helicopters.  Nothing worse than two squad members spawning on the carrier only to have some loner sitting there in a 2 person vehicle waiting for a pilot.
  4. Also with squads, I’d like to see a few default squads created every map like “Jet” “Heli” and “Armor” where only members of those squads can get into the related vehicles.  This would greatly reduce arguments over who was next in line.  Being in the same squad already, they could also coordinate attacks or discuss who’s next.  Spawn points of those in the squad could then be moved closer to their vehicle.  I’d remove the squad leader’s power to kick people from these squads, as this could be abused.
  5. The ability to toggle off the “Enemy spotted” each time someone points out an enemy unit.  Perhaps add it to my default script idea above.  Allow me to choose what targets I’m alerted about, like armor only or air targets.  Show them on the map with red dots, but stop the endless commander spam.
  6. Anti-Air units that are infantry based.  Maybe one shot per spawn, and keep them limited range.  The permanent AA stations should have their distance increased from the present.
  7. Air vehicles should allow the color of their crosshairs to be changed.   I hate feeling blind while gunning in a helicopter on Dragon Valley.  Also, the 2nd person in a bomber should have at least one additional function to perform, perhaps some sort of countermeasures so that they don’t have to helplessly watch when their pilot decides to chase other planes.
  8. Either remove the uncappable bases or at least give them their own AI controlled defenses.  Far too much arguing occurs over people bombing or camping uncaps, as each server has to create and enforce their own rules set.  It would be nice to have some destructible AA, machine gun nests, and maybe even an arty strike automatically fire when enemies approach.  Simply having an AI controlled squad of bots that spawn at the uncaps could do this.
  9. Upgradable skill tree.  All players could start out as one of the basic classes.  Then they could branch out into subclasses, including commander.  A General commanding might then get to use his UAV a little more often than a Captain commanding.  A sniper class might get a basic scope, then get night vision or a higher powered scope later on.  General options like faster sprint, stamina, health, and other stats could also be boosted.
  10. Squad leader experience.  Squad leaders should get bonus points for accomplishing objectives given by the commander.  Blowing bridges, enemy artillery, capping flags, or even holding a flag for a length of time.
  11. The ability to take items from someone of the same class when picking up their kit on the battlefield.  Refresh ammo, grenades, and mines without actually switching kits.
